Ghosted

'Ghosted' is an exclusive edition from artist Fleur Yearsley for The Manchester Contemporary. Reproduced from the original oil on canvas painting (90 x 100mm) 2022.

OUCH watch out! ‘Ghosted’ is an evocative painting of a figure stepping onto a discarded Lego piece. A freeze frame captured at the point of no return. The foot hovers over an impenetrable building block, connected to an unsuspecting person just out of frame.

The brightness of the red Lego signifies a warning, but humorous in nature as it hasn’t been spotted. The painting plays with a complimentary colour palette, pastel and balanced, which is at odds with the anticipated painful reaction to the image.

‘Ghosted’ brings a wave of nostalgia for our eclectic collections of iconic toys. The palm tree and ghost, disparate in their relationship to one another, stand in like actors off centre stage with a sense of uncanniness. The ghost awaiting the melodrama, acts as metaphor to the unseen Lego piece, and leads us to question whether they are the hero or the villain.
